10 Avery Point Baseball Standouts Named to NJCAA All-New England First Team & 2nd team
Groton, CT — May 28, 2025 — Following a stellar 31-8 season, the University of Connecticut Avery Point baseball team is proud to announce that five of its players have been named to the NJCAA All-New England First Team. The honors recognize the top performers from across the region, and Avery Point's selections reflect the team's powerful offense and consistent play throughout the 2025 campaign.
The Pointers were led by a core of standout hitters who posted elite numbers across the board:
Tim Cap (C)
A force in the lineup all season, Cap posted a remarkable .372 batting average and a 1.202 OPS. He led the team with 50 RBIs and crushed 5 home runs, while also tallying 14 doubles and 4 triples. With 35 walks and an on-base percentage of .524, Cap proved to be one of the most disciplined and dangerous hitters in the region.
John Bureau (1B/OF)
Bureau's consistent production earned him a .367 average and 1.169 OPS. He drove in 48 runs and hit 7 homers, along with 7 doubles and 2 triples. His .536 OBP was among the best in New England, and he also swiped 7 bases in 8 attempts, showcasing his all-around impact on the game.
AJ Montejano (C/UTIL)
A catalyst at the top of the order, Montejano led the team in runs scored (50) and matched the team-high with 44 hits. He batted .338 with a .961 OPS, adding 6 doubles and 5 triples. His 12 stolen bases and .476 OBP demonstrate his combination of speed, power, and patience at the plate.
Darren Gasparri (OF)
Gasparri delivered clutch performances all season long, hitting .337 with a .912 OPS. He recorded 33 hits, 23 RBIs, and drew 25 walks against just 24 strikeouts. His .473 OBP helped bridge the batting order for the Pointers.
Albert Savino (LHP)
Savino served as a workhorse in the rotation, compiling a 5-1 record with a 3.74 ERA across 45.2 innings pitched. He struck out 48 batters while issuing just 19 walks and holding opponents to a .283 batting average. With two complete games and a steady presence on the mound, Savino was a reliable arm in key moments for the Pointers.

This recognition is well-deserved and a testament to the culture of excellence we've built."
The NJCAA All-New England selections highlight Avery Point's continued presence as a powerhouse in the region and a nurturing ground for collegiate talent.

 5 Pointers were also named to the Region XXI 2nd team.
 William Estronza (SS)
Estronza, defensively was a catalyst for the Pointer defense. Providing stellar and consistent play throughout the season. Offensively he finished with a surge, finishing at .320 average and a .902 OPS. He collected 33 hits, 23 RBIs and  helping to drive a .504 OBP. A perfect 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts, Estronza brought energy and consistency to the field and lineup.
Daniel Lang (RHP)
Lang led the team in innings pitched with 50.1 and matched Savino's win total at 5-1. Despite a 5.01 ERA, Lang showcased strikeout power with 60 Ks on the year. His 9 starts highlighted his durability, and his .271 opponent batting average kept hitters in check throughout the season.
Ryan Catalano (LHP)
Catalano was lights-out in relief, pitching to a minuscule 2.08 ERA and a dazzling 0.77 WHIP over 13 innings. He allowed just 10 hits and issued no walks while striking out 11. Opposing hitters batted only .217 against him, and his clean, efficient outings helped lock down several key games.
Ryan Erskine (RHP)
Erskine served as the Pointers' primary closer, notching 4 saves and a 2.41 ERA over 18.2 innings. He gave up just 9 hits all season, holding opponents to a .145 batting average—the lowest on the team. His ability to shut the door late in games was instrumental in preserving leads and fueling the team's 31-win campaign.
Jayden Sgro (OF)
Sgro manned CF for the Pointers for most of the season. Combining a top-notch defense with a strong offensive output. Sgro finished the season at .303 and stole 6-7 bags throughout the season. His legs were a big impact in tournament games towards the end of the season.

"The Avery Point experience gives players an understanding of collegiate landscape and provides them with understanding to be successful both at the next collegiate level and for many Avery Point alums, the professional level."
