The UConn Avery Point baseball team split a doubleheader at Westchester CC on Saturday afternoon.
Westchester secured the game 1 pitchers duel 2-1.
Jackson Pray threw a complete game surrendering only 3 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) while striking out 8. Unfortunately, the Pointer offense couldn't get anything going against Westchester's ace.
The Pointers rallied in game 2 securing the win 3-2, with a come from behind victory in the top of the 7th.
Trailing 2-1 in the 7th
Martin Light led off the frame with a double off the left field fence. After Aaron Lopresto sacrificed him to third,
Max Petrini grounded to the Westchester third baseman who threw the ball away allowing Light to score and Petrini to move to second.
Matt Wood replaced Petrini as a pinch runner and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Jared Russo pinch hit for
Jonas Tiburcio and hit a sacrifice fly to rightfield scoring Wood for the go-ahead run.
In the bottom half of the frame
Daniel St. George came on in relief for
Ryan Erskine, and quickly got 2 outs. The Westchester leadoff hitter hit a long fly ball off the top of the fence for a double and St. George hit the next batter. Head Coach, Travis Beausoleil then called on Freshman
Jack Hayes to secure the last out and he did with a strikeout securing his 1st save of his career.
The Pointers return to action against Holyoke CC on Tuesday and have a homestand to follow with Eastern CT on Wednesday at 3:30P, NIchols College on Friday at 3:30P and will host Suffolk County CC on Sunday at Noon.
