Pointers Sweep Lackawanna

AP blasts 10 homeruns in DH Sweep

THROOP, Pa. – UConn Avery Point baseball delivered an offensive showcase Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from Lackawanna College at Mid Valley High School. The Pointers stormed back for a thrilling 13-11 win in game one before erupting for a dominant 22-6 victory in six innings in game two.

The matchup marked the first meeting between the two programs since last year's NJCAA East District Championship, and this time it was Avery Point (2-2) that made the statement.

Game One – Pointers Rally in Spectacular Fashion

Trailing 10-5 entering the seventh inning, Avery Point refused to back down. The Pointers exploded for eight runs in the top of the frame, launching three home runs to completely swing momentum and stun the home crowd.

After loading the bases with no outs, a bases-loaded walk and a productive ground out trimmed the deficit. Then the fireworks began. A towering three-run homer by sophomore Jared Russo tied the game at 10-10. Following a hit batter and a strikeout, Avery Point crushed a two-run blast from sophomore captain AJ Montjeno to seize the lead. A back2back solo shot by transfer James Fagnant added insurance and capped an unforgettable inning, putting UCAP ahead 13-10.

The Falcons threatened in the bottom half, cutting the lead to two and bringing the tying run to the plate, but the Pointers shut the door to secure the dramatic victory.

Avery Point belted six home runs in the opener as part of a 15-hit attack in a game that featured nine combined long balls.

Game Two – Power Surge Powers the Sweep

If game one showed resilience, game two displayed pure dominance. Avery Point's offense continued its power surge, hammering four more home runs — including three grand slams — in a 22-6 rout shortened to six innings.

The Pointers built steady pressure early, scoring 10 runs through four innings, highlighted by a grand slam and a two-run homer in the fourth to take full control at 10-0.

The sixth inning put the game emphatically out of reach. Avery Point plated 12 runs in the frame, capitalizing on patience at the plate and clutch power hitting. A grand slam made it 18-2, and after reloading the bases once again, another grand slam pushed the lead to 22-2.

In total, the Pointers tallied 13 hits and six extra-base hits in the nightcap, overwhelming Lackawanna pitching from start to finish.

Statement Performance

Across the doubleheader, Avery Point launched 10 home runs and showcased both resilience and explosiveness at the plate. The comeback in game one demonstrated grit under pressure, while the commanding performance in game two highlighted the team's offensive firepower.

With the sweep, the Pointers gain early-season momentum and make a strong statement in a rematch of last year's championship meeting.
